The Amendment Act that came into force on 1 October 2009 reduced the time for making further submissions from 20 working days to 10 working days. This gives just two weeks to make any further submissions to the Proposed Plan . The deadline for further submissions is Thursday, 1st April. There a maybe a possibility that this will be extended - we will notify you of any changes to the deadline.

Government Consultation on Employment Relations Act
The government is consulting on two parts of the Employment Relations Act: personal grievances and the transfer of employees. We will be making submissions to government and attending the select committee hearing on personal grievances to speak to those submissions.

We would like to hear your views on how the Act is working – both good and bad. As we act mainly for employers, we see this as an important opportunity to formally express the concerns you voice to us anecdotally, and for you to be heard on how the Act really works.

Property Matters - Unit Titles Bills Progresses
The Unit Titles Bill received its second reading in Parliament last week following review by the Social Services Select Committee.

The Bill is intended to modernise the establishment of unit title developments and the management of these. It repeals and replaces the Unit Titles Act 1972 in response to the growth in apartment style living that has occurred in New Zealand over the last 30 years.

Is the Authority soft on drugs?
Two recent decisions from the Authority suggest that recreational drug use is acceptable.

McLeod v Transfield Services Limited
Mr McLeod, a “vegetation worker”, was so relaxed he fell out of a tree. His employer, Transfield, following its usual procedure, tested for drugs, and Mr McLeod tested positive for cannabis.
Following a disciplinary investigation, during which Mr McLeod was offered and accepted EAP assistance, Mr McLeod was dismissed for serious misconduct.
