The Western Bay of Plenty District Council (“WBOPDC”) has summarised the submissions received on its proposed District Plan. New persons may now make a submission supporting or opposing any of those original submissions. This provides a further opportunity for anybody to get involved in the District Plan Review, even if they did not file an original submission. It also provides the only opportunity to comment on matters raised in those submissions that may directly impact on you or your property.

Three main issues appear to be the focus of submissions on the Plan.

The first is a controversial new regime for dealing with rural subdivisions. The new Plan clearly makes it more difficult to subdivide rural land.

The second relates to the newly introduced post harvest zone. The zone provides for some existing packhouse facilities to expand their operations more easily. Clearly a pragmatic move by the Council reflecting the importance of horticulture to the district. However, many nearby residents are concerned that the new rules do not sufficiently protect their properties from the effects of these activities.

The third relates to the introduction of the Tauranga Harbour Landscape Management Area which affects all rural and rural residential land adjoining the Harbour.
