IMMIGRATION LAW TO CHANGE TO PROTECT MIGRANT WORKERS

Stories about employers exploiting migrant workers by removing their passports, making them live in substandard housing and work for much less than the minimum wage have appeared with disheartening frequency in the media lately. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) has issued warnings to a number of employers for exploitation and employment of illegal workers, but has been powerless to do more.

Summer is Coming....and so is Seasonal Employment

Many industries rely heavily on seasonal workers over the busy summer months. Employers hiring seasonal workers need to take care that their contractual arrangements with those employees are consistent with fixed term, rather than permanent employment to avoid employees challenging their dismissal at the end of the season.
