HOUSING ACCORD SIGNED BY HOUSING MINISTER AND REGION'S MAYORS

Tauranga City Council and the Western Bay of Plenty District Council have now both reached an agreement known as a Housing Accord with the Housing Minister to facilitate an increase in supply of housing and improve housing affordability in the region. Each Council aims to achieve this in the next two years by consenting to the development of:

  • 1,000 new homes in the Tauranga district; and
  • 575 new homes in the Western Bay of Plenty district.

The next step is for each Council to establish Special Housing Areas. Upon doing this, residential property developers will be able to apply for their subdivision application to be fast tracked under the Housing Accord and Special Housing Areas Act 2013 ("the Act"). The Act provides an alternative resource consenting process to the Resource Management Act 1991 if the residential property developer's development is:

  • Located within a Special Housing Area; and
  • Meets the criteria set out under the Council's Housing Accord.
